About the ArtistsTony Martucci - Drums The Martucci / Balbed Quartet is a collaboration between two long-time bandleaders on the DC jazz scene - Drummer Tony Martucci and Saxophonist Elijah Jamal Balbed. This collaboration is an effort to feature some of the DMV area’s stalwarts and dig into the repertoire that these greats have performed and recorded. On this concert, the group will be joined by the legendary DC bassist Steve Novosel - who toured and performed with Rashaan Roland Kirk, Eddie Harris, David “Fathead” Newman, Charles Tolliver, Larry Willis, Donny Hathaway, Roberts Flack, and many others. At 85 years of age, he is a patriarch of the jazz scene here in Washington, DC. Rounding the ensemble out will be Professor of Jazz Studies at UDC and top-call DC pianist Allyn Johnson, and trumpeter and composer Victor Haskins from Richmond, VA. Victor and Elijah were in the 2013 Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead program together at The Kennedy Center, under the direction of Jason Moran. This project is supported by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. |
